Robins - Information

Robins – Information

The Robins are a fabulous Year 1 and 2 children. They are taught by Mrs Whitaker, Mrs James and Mrs Harrison. Year 1 are taught by Mrs James on a Monday – Wednesday morning, and Year 2 are taught by Mrs Whitaker Monday-Thursday, and Mrs Harrison on a Friday. In the afternoons all the Robin children come together for our topic learning. We have a mixture of formal whole class learning, and independent challenges that the children can complete each week.  We are supported in class by Mrs Donald.

Weekly Routines

PE (Friday)

PE will take place on Friday afternoon. The children will need a full PE kit in a PE bag. This should remain at school, and will be sent home at the end of half term to be washed. The children will need; purple PE T-shirt, black shorts/skort (not skirt), trainers and socks. We will try to be outside for PE as much as possible, so if children have a school hoody please include that. Otherwise they can wear their school jumper/cardigan for PE. All PE kit can be purchased via the school website. Please ensure all items are named.

Forest Schools (The day will vary from week to week, this will be communicated via the newsletter)

We are very lucky to have Mrs Ingram teaching in Robin class this year, and she will be doing forest schools with the children. From next week (7th Sept), children will need to come to school wearing forest schools kit. This does not need to be anything new – old leggings/joggers, a warm jumper, waterproof trousers and coat, and hat/gloves. Children should bring boots or wellies in a carrier bag to change into for forest schools. Please ensure all items are named.

Reading Books in Robin Class

We are changing the way we do home reading this year, in line with current DfE guidance on early reading. Children will be given a phonetically decodable reading book to practice at home which allows them to practice the phonics phases they are currently working on in school. Children will also be given a non-decodable book to share with an adult at home. Children will be encouraged to re-read these books, to allow them to practice blending the letters to decode words, and become more fluent. Books will be changed in school twice a week. Further information about reading will be shared in due course. This is a new system for us, so please bear with us if there are teething problems. Please ensure that reading books and reading records come to school everyday in your child’s book bag.

Children will be taught phonics in year 1, and spelling in year 2, on a daily basis. These sessions are fast paced and dynamic, involving games, activities, reading, writing and spelling.
To support your child with their phonics and spelling, we will send home a letter pack, for you to help your child practice and enhance their letters and sounds skills.
