Owls – Information

Welcome to Owls

Owls are a class of enthusiastic, curious year 5 and 6 children.

In Owls, the children are taught the national curriculum in a creative and fun way. We have been learning about how our brain works and how we learn – our teachers make sure we have opportunities to think hard, and we are always trying to make sure we know more and can do more.

In Owls we learn Maths and English every morning and practise our times tables through the Mastering Number Programme.  We do spellings every day, either learning new rules with Mrs Whitaker, or practicing our spelling independently and taking responsibility for learning them. On a Friday, we have a dedicated reading lesson with Mr Prescott where we learn and practice reading skills through fantastic books.

Weekly routines:

Games & P.E.
Children should come to school in their games kit on a Tuesday and Wednesday.

Swimming
Swimming lessons take place at Hornby pool. The children thoroughly enjoy these lessons and make excellent progress. They need to bring their swimwear and a towel, together with a warm coat and hat to wear for the journey to and from school. Owls will swim in Autumn 1 term and Spring 1 term.

Reading
Children in Owl class are expected to read independently as much as possible. We encourage reading at home and at school. Fluent and confident readers should also read aloud to an adult, as it helps them to develop tone and expression.

Homework
Homework is ongoing with reading books, spellings practise on Spelling Frame, Maths on Purple Mash and Times Tables practise on Times Tables Rock Stars. We encourage the children to access these resources as much as possible to help their fluency and confidence. If you need help accessing these platforms, please let me know.

Spellings
Spellings are updated on a Monday on Spelling Frame. Children are encouraged to practice them 2-3 times a week.

Times Tables

At the end of Year 4, all children need to be able to recall their times tables. In year 5 and 6, times table knowledge is vital for accessing the wider maths curriculum, so children still need to practice. Use it or lose it! We do lots of work in school on this, but regular practise at home will also support confidence and fluency in recalling facts. Each child has a Times Tables Rock Star login. Please ask if you need a reminder for log in details.

Purple Mash

Each week, a homework task will be set on Purple Mash. This will usually be maths, and linked to what we have been learning in class. Please ask if you need a reminder for log in details.
